The other services listed on this site examine a website that already exists and report where it does not meet the Norwegian requirements. This service produces the website. The specification is agreed in writing before work begins, and the site is built to meet those requirements from the outset rather than corrected afterwards.
Design specification
Design preferences are recorded on a single form, issued in response to an enquiry. It takes approximately twenty minutes to complete and covers the following.
Colour
An existing brand palette, or a direction to be developed.
Geometry
Rounded or square edges, and the degree of either.
Typography
Serif or sans serif, and the scale at which it is set.
Spacing
Open or compact.
Imagery
Photography, illustration, or neither.
Tone
Plain, formal, or conversational.
Objective
The action a visitor is intended to take.
References
Three sites you consider successful, and one you do not.
Requirements
Page count, languages, and the date the site is required.
The completed form is returned to us. The first deliverable is a single finished page, built to those answers and submitted for approval before the remainder of the site is produced.
Scope
Appropriate where
- A company is operating in, or entering, the Norwegian market and the site is subject to Norwegian requirements.
- A domain has been registered and no site has been published on it.
- An existing site can no longer be maintained by the party that produced it.
- The company does not intend to maintain the site itself.
Not appropriate where
- The site is to be edited in-house. A self-service platform is the appropriate product.
- The requirement is for an application rather than a website: booking logic, customer accounts, or internal systems.
- The requirement is for content produced at volume.
- Cost is the primary selection criterion.
Procedure
- 01
Enquiry
A short description of the company and the site required. No obligation arises at this stage and no payment is requested.
- 02
Specification
The design form is issued and returned. Approximately twenty minutes to complete.
- 03
Quotation
A fixed price and a written scope are issued before any payment. Fifty per cent is payable on acceptance and the balance on publication.
- 04
First page
One completed page is produced and submitted for approval. Revision at this stage is straightforward. Revision after the full site is built is not, which is why approval is taken here.
- 05
Production
The remaining pages are built to the approved design. Two rounds of revisions are included. Progress is available on a private address throughout.
- 06
Publication
DNS, certificates and redirection from any previous site are handled by us. The site is monitored for the first week following publication.
Three to five weeks from receipt of the completed specification and all content. Where content is outstanding, the quotation states what is required and by when.
Cost
Each build is quoted individually. Page count alone is not a reliable measure of the work involved, so no fixed packages are offered. The quotation is issued from the completed specification, in writing, before work begins.
The following determine the figure.
- Scale and variation
- The number of distinct layouts rather than the number of pages. Twelve pages across three layouts is a smaller engagement than five pages that differ from one another.
- Languages
- Each additional language affects layout as well as content, as text length varies between languages.
- Content
- Whether copy and photography are supplied. Where these are produced by us, it is normally the largest component of the quotation.
- Custom functionality
- Calculators, maps, filtered listings, booking steps, or any element that must be developed rather than laid out.
- Regulatory scope
- Which Norwegian requirements apply to the site in question. This is confirmed before the quotation is issued.
The price is fixed before work begins. Any change to the agreed scope is quoted separately and approved before it is carried out.
Maintenance
A published website requires maintenance. Prices, contact details, personnel and products change, and the software the site runs on requires patching. Three levels are available.
Care
$95 a month
Hosting, DNS, backups, uptime monitoring and security patching. Includes two minor amendments each month.
Managed
$220 a month
As Care, with a change queue. Requests may be submitted at any time and in any quantity. One request is worked on at a time and is commenced the following working day.
Priority
$450 a month
As Managed, with same-day commencement, a monthly review call, and continuing content and search work.
The single-request queue is a deliberate limit. Requests are unlimited in number and carry no additional charge. They are processed in order, one at a time, so that the position of each is known and none is left partially completed.
Articles are also written on a monthly basis for sites that require continuing search visibility. Each begins with keyword research in the relevant market and language, and is written individually. These are quoted per article, as the cost depends on the subject and the language.
Agreements run month to month following any initial term, terminable on thirty days’ notice. Payment annually in advance is discounted by two months.
Norwegian requirements
Norway imposes obligations on websites that do not depend on where the company is registered. The principal one is universal design. WCAG level A and AA is a legal requirement for private undertakings, enforced by the Authority for Universal Design of ICT. There is no exemption for small businesses and none for sites operated from outside Norway.
Further obligations depend on what the site does. The rules on discounts and reference prices apply to any site advertising reduced prices. Norwegian expectations of a checkout differ from those in other markets. Tax registration is a separate matter and is handled under a separate service where it applies.
Meeting these requirements during construction adds little to the cost. Meeting them afterwards requires an assessment, development work, and a second release.
The service is not limited to .no domains. Sites are built on whichever domain the client holds, and a number of them run on a .com with a .no directed to it. Norwegian requirements are the area we know best. They are not a condition of engagement.
Ownership
The website is the property of the client. The code, the content, the images produced for the project, the domain and the hosting account are all held in the client’s name.
On termination we transfer the repository, a working copy of the site, control of the DNS, and written documentation of how the site is constructed. No fee applies and no notice beyond the thirty days is required.
No commission is taken on sales made through the site. Attribution in the footer appears only at the client’s request.
The remaining services for companies operating in Norway are listed on the services page. Where only the domain is required, the trustee service is $89 a year.
Making an enquiry
A short description of the company, what the site is required to do, and an indication of the number of pages. A fixed price and a start date are issued in response, or confirmation that the service is not suitable.
